Should there be a third major political party?
June 26th, 2014

Should there be a third major political party?

Lots of political news to discuss in the Crossfire tonight.

The Supreme Court sided with Congress on Thursday in the high-stakes power struggle over presidential recess appointments, in which officials are placed in top government jobs temporarily without Senate approval.

The closely watched constitutional and political confrontation over the practice has accelerated because of partisan gridlock in Congress. Full story

Meanwhile, Speaker of the House John Boehner is planning to sue the President over executive orders. Has Obama exceeded his presidential authority?

Also, Sarah Palin continues to mention her idea of having a third party in politics.

At 6:30pm ET, S.E. Cupp, Van Jones, Newt Gingrich and Stephanie Cutter host a debate on a special episode of Crossfire.

Crossfire four hosts

Does the U.S. need a stronger 3rd political party?

Vote by tweeting Yes or No using #Crossfire or comment on our Facebook post. View results below or through our Poptip results page.

As long as the Republican and Democratic parties dominate our politics and governance nothing will change. We need independent candidates to run for office who serve the good of the country and the good of their fellow Americans above all. I have chosen to run for US Congress as an independent, unaffiliated candidate in NY. If you feel the same then I Ask you to please support the campaign. I also ask you to consider running for office or encourage other independent candidates to run for office. http://www.sendmrsmith2014.com

It is time the USA had a true multi party system like Canada and the rest of Europe. This two party dictatorship and oligarchy is total gridlock. We need votes of no-confidence in Congress and coalition governments. Minorities need to get true representation. Overturn Citizens United. Corporations are not people. The USA needs to stop corporate welfare.

No need for a 'Third' political party.

We just need to take the RNC, DNC, National X, ... to task for interfering in Local, District, and State elections.

We must end the RNC, DNC, National X Racketeering.

"3rd" Political Parties fail, because there is not enough interest, financial backing, nor "clout" to every get off the ground and make a difference. While a case can be made for the "Tea Party" – it is a "vent" for the frustrations of disgruntled, dissatisfied Republicans, Democrats, Libertarians, Independents feeling their own parties, (if they have one), is not doing the job. The Tea Party has made a difference. Will it last? Perhaps. Maybe not! Only time will tell. I believe the only results brought about by the rise of a 3rd party, is diametrically opposite to that which brought it into being. It splits the voting block of the party being "reformed" and aids the election of those of the opposition party in staying in power, or coming to power. It provides a "straw man" to both major parties. Blame is passed around, but lands on the 3rd party aspirants because they "dared" to protest the historical "older" and some claim "wiser" parties, because they represent "mainstream" voting blocks and have tenure and experience. That argument will never be won or lost, because fervor and emotion usually drive the debate, as opposed to common-sense and reason.

There can't be a third major party in the US. Look up something called Duverger's Law. That explains how the Constitution has defacto mandated two parties.

Why don't we concentrate on having TWO Parties first. There is no difference between the GOP and DNC when it comes to serving their Wealthy Masters, and the Tea Party only serves the Koch Brothers.

You people kill me. You think that the issue is the party's? No its your own apathy, lack of courage and unwillingness to pay what it cost for democracy. A third party will simply wipe out the other two and make it easier to pass stuff that hurts us.

You're like crabs in water that is being turned up 1 degree every 1 minute and its getting warm now so you're complaining more but in the end you're gonna get cooked because thats what happens to people who think that freedom is free.

If you think there should be a 3rd party in the US you need to read about " Duverger's law" which is something every freshman Political Science major knows. A real third party is impossible in democracies such as the US.

    Independents for Independence!

Spread the word. Find an Independent or third party candidate (there are lots of parties in existence) you can tolerate and vote accordingly.

If 25% of voters choose someone who is not a Democrat or Republican, then both parties will have to sit up and take notice.

Who are the most well-informed people politicos? Independents!

Why? Because both Republicans and Democrats try their hardest to inform the Independent about why he/she should side with them on an issue. Getting relevant information from both sides means an Independent is better informed. An Independent can then vote for what is best for the constituents back home while the Democrats and Republicans are left voting within their own block, never knowing the full scope about what was in a piece of legislation.

Independents for Independence! Spread the word.

    Sweep the House!
    Clear the Senate!

ONLY if there is an end "run-off" for the top two candidates. Without this, two left leaning candidates each getting 32% of the vote (64% overall for a more liberal agenda) is beaten by one conservative only receiving 36%of the total vote; therefore by a near 2 to 1 margin The People don't favor the winner's agenda.

It's no surprise a lot of people want a 3rd party. We don't feel either party truly represents our views. The problem is what would the 3rd party platform be? I know my views are not the same as other people who feel disenfranchised by the existing structure so starting a new party wouldn't capture all the people who don't like the current ones. What we need more is a spirit of compromise. Until all parties can work together to find our common ground and not about making political points we will never progress and will be in an endless cycle of gridlock. They need to look at the founding fathers of our country to see our whole government is built upon the promise of working together in a spirit of compromise.

Of course we need another party to arise. The voices of discord between having just two sides with lines drawn in the sand has gotten to be more harmful than beneficial. I don't pledge loyalty to a party. I think to say the indepedent, free spirited being that I am needs not to be reduced to an identity via a party. At one time, both parties had shown that they had goodness and honesty. Now it seems that some within the parties are nut case radica freaks who are hell bent on taking over the Nation with their agendas. We do need a new party. One not of pedigrees but of the ways of mutts. Those loveable mutts that get along with the pedigrees and non pedigrees alike. The ones that don't strut their stuff looking for persona accolades and glory but take the quieter, sure footed confident approach.
Yes I think I would like that. I say we start a new party called the MUTTS- MODERATE UTILITARIANS TRYING TO SUCCEED!!! And the rabid dogs of the othe parties can growl and snip and bite all they want. The Mutts will just get together over a shared bone and watch the others brutally attack each other. Heres to the MUTTS!

Actually, if more Americans would have listened to Perot back in 1992, we wouldn't be in this mess right now. The American people and the real American economy would have been much better off today! I and many other people, who were able to see through all of the left vs right BS, did vote for Perot, because he was straight forward and just used common sense. He cared about his country and the American people.

I loved President Reagan, because he brought pride and respect back to our country after those embarrassingly weak Carter years, but unfortunately his shortsighted economic policy sent us down the wrong path. Reaganonomics was a huge mistake. Under Clinton jobs to China, Under Bush I & II influx of illegals/cheap labor into the US and jobs to Mexico/NAFTA – Bush started it and it was signed into effect by Clinton. Jeez and the wizards on Wall Street wonder why the American people aren't putting as much money into savings and their 401k plans anymore. Maybe it's because the shortsighted economic policies, from the 1980's to the present, have come back to bite the hands that feed them. I guess the thought of changing from a manufacturing based economy to a service based economy of smoke and mirrors is working out just great? – Not!

The people with all of the excuses as to why we can’t, shouldn't or aren’t willing to manufacture products here in the US are the same people who have provided us with the very same shortsighted thinking that’s gotten us into this mess in the first place.

If more people would have listened to Ross Perot back in 1992, America wouldn't be in this mess.

The bottom line is that "Our Government" has to protect American jobs and domestic industry – If they do that, the rest will take care of itself.

Bringing manufacturing back to the US not only gives jobs to the US citizens who would be working in those manufacturing facilities, but to the people that would be working in the businesses that would spring up all around them. This should also include the safe harvesting, production and distribution of our own natural energy here in the USA, rather than paying for fuel from countries where they hate us. Let's keep that money and those jobs here in the US.

The “Global Market Place” is not a level playing field! The whole idea of the tariffs is so we can pay our factory workers a decent wage and not be blown out by these other countries where they don’t play by the same rules. We may have to pay a bit more for products made here in the USA by US citizens, but at least we'll still have jobs and a future for our children.

The lack of businesses and good jobs in the USA is what's really going to rob us, our children, grandchildren and great grandchildren of the potential of a prosperous or even decent future.

It's all happened because, over the last 25-years, our government has allowed our country's industries to get sucked out to countries like Communist China, India, Mexico, etc and allowed illegal aliens and H-1B foreigners to come into our country and take away tax-paying Americans jobs and drive down wages.

It has all happened way too fast – Our government leaders should have put measures in place to make it slower, so that it wouldn't devastate our country, which has no chance when competing with other countries that don't play by the same rules or have pay scales that are even remotely close.

That's where our government leaders have to step up and put some sensible measures and incentives in place to keep jobs here in the USA or the real economy and infrastructure of the country we love will be destroyed along with the future of the American people.

Nowadays it's obviously not about being either lazy or uneducated as many try to profess, but about wages, expenses and regulations that are not even remotely close to the wages, expenses and regulations in our country.

Regardless of what the Free-Traitors keep trying to sell us, we can see what's real. The American People need to just trust their own instincts, common sense and what they've seen actually going on all around them versus all of the nonsense that the Free-Traitors are still trying to sell us.

The American people will need good jobs with health-care benefits in order to be able to pay for the services of those educated doctors, lawyers, college professors, etc. – It can't all be chiefs and no Indians. There is an equally important place for both of them in America.

The ONLY REAL FIX for our great country is to RAISE REVENUE, by Bringing Back Businesses and Jobs to TAX-PAYING AMERICAN CITIZENS.

The American People need Our Leaders to start remembering that they are elected by the Citizens of the United States of America to represent the interests of those citizens and the country itself and that They're NOT Elected By or To Represent Lobbyist, the Global Marketplace (WTO, NAFTA TPP), Foreign Citizens or Illegal Aliens.

It is important to understand that the aggressive propaganda intended to discredit Obama is not only deceptive but is empty of any real promise for the people. Obama's credits become impressive when objective recognition is given to the facts that he inherited the problems – two mismanaged wars and the finacial crisis facilitated by allowing exploitation by "the money", whose greed was encouraged by "puppet" politicians who they strongly supported – and that everything had to be accomplished over the arrogant faulting and stubborn blocking of the Republicans as they contributed nothing and depended on abundant propaganda to con the people and manipulate public opinion. Now they want to return to more of the same, Bush-Cheney style, which can only result in more of the same.

Are you serious? No matter what a President "inherits" it is up to him to say and do the things that are necessary to create the tone and vibe to make it better. Sometimes when you get a tough task to deal with you have to think hard about how to frame your thoughts and words and put aside your own personal vendettas and desires for revenge. Obama has not done that. He has make our nation a nation of vicious fighters that have turned against each other all due to his ideas of money and taxation . He inherited our nation and was entrusted with the presidency not a personal platform to cause chaos and distrust. Think whatever you want. His leadership is not born of having attained skilled judgment, his style is one of slam through rules designed to say F#c* you to joy, beauty, success, faith, honor, integrity, balance, creativity, pride, determination, independence, joy, prudence, and justice. No doubt you must also be one of the ones who has the F*c# attitude towards your fellow citizens. A lot of you out here in our society today, that's for sure

Obama will be remembered for the longest recovery from recession in US history due primarily to his ramming Obamacare down the throats of the American people.
Obama will be remembered for ignoring his own bipartisan deficit commission to accomplish his political goals, doubling his predecessors national debt, even after enacting the biggest tax hikes in US history.
Obama will be remembered for his Academy Award winning 2008 portrayal of "Centrist Uniter."
Obama will be remembered for setting Millennials up for the rawest deal of any generation in US history.

I agree, but only to a degree. Obama has faults as does any president. He is certainly not the best in the office has ever seen. He has lied to a degree that other presidents have. What really concerns me is the virulence of the opposition, the utter hate far beyond rational dislike or disagreement involving politics. I am seeing articles stating 925 Obama executive orders and listing them, It makes it appear Obama is on a one man crusade to imprison north America. But the executive orders listed were from president Kennedy during the cold war and Cuban missile crisis to arrange and coordinate interstate infrastructure in case of thermonuclear war. What concerns me is that these sites are re-posting these "facts" from other sources without looking into any of it. Like simply typing in the executive order # to see the date and which president issued it. The sad fact is that the truth does not matter if it fits the hate narrative and the bias. The fact is that I think he has overstepped the boundary and It needs to be addressed, perhaps impeachment is warranted here. However, liars and cheats calling someone a liar and a cheat holds no water with me. The sad part is that the uninformed and lazy biased individual thinks 925 executive orders are Obama's and buy it hook line and sinker. They are the ones who pose more risk to this country than any mediocre two term president ever will. They easily mislead, and choose to be.

There cannot be a third major party in the US for any period of time.

The reason is we don't have a parlimentary process. It's all or nothing for each election.

If it were parlimentary, you'd vote for a party and if your party got 10% of the vote, you'd get 10% of the seats in congress. In our setup, if you get 10% of the vote, you get nothing. That's what pushes us toward a two party system.

We could get a third party for a short period that would either predict the end of one party and beginning of another (see how the Whigs disappeared in favor of the new Republican party that took it's place... though both were around simultaneously for a short time) or a drastic shift in the policies of existing parties (As the "dixiecrats" forshadowed changes to both the democrat and GOP policies on both race and religion).

But we can't have 3 for any extended period becuase any large percentage less then fully winning a seat doesn't get you a spot at the table.

It doesn't matter how many party names we have or even if we have no party names, our government will still function the same way. We need someone who's honest and sincerely in it for the people of this country. A person who can tolerate anyone to be able to negotiate to get things moving and happening on important broken issues and someone with no past baggage to cloud over the presidency. This is what's 100% needed regardless to what party or no party he or she may belong to. The party names are meaningless because it's the person who's doing the job. The party names are nothing but a huge obstacles blocking important issues that needed to be fixed in our country and cause nothing but constant controversy.

The way the elections are run, "Why does it even matter what party anyone belongs to because we don't even get a chance to vote on over half of them?". They are not heard on national news due to not enough money or they just flat out run out of money, or they just drop out of the race ect.. Money dictates the entire race when it's really supposed to be about the people in the United States but it's 100% not. If our election starts with 10 candidates regardless to what party, as a the people of the country we deserve to hear what all these 10 people have to say during the entire race and have the chance to vote for one of them. They all need to put on the ballot because all of them are running for the same chance to become president of the United States.

Damn straight there should be a legitimate 3rd party or 4th party and I'm not talking about the Tea Party unless they get rid of Free-Traitors like Cruz.

The problem in trying to elect good leaders for The United States of America has nothing to do with the color or gender of our politicians. It's our politician's, from both parties, lack of honesty and the lack of willingness to do right by the US citizens that they're elected by and should be representing.

Almost all of our political leaders' talk is just cheap and meaningless! – When will these people finally wake up and step up with real ideas and real action, instead of just meaningless talk and tokenism? – These idiots have been avoiding action for 2-3 decades.

As far as I'm concerned this is the bottom line: The ONLY REAL FIX for our great country is to RAISE REVENUE, by Bringing Back Businesses and Jobs to TAX-PAYING AMERICAN CITIZENS.

This is the only way that Americans are going to be able to "Get a Raise" and sustain it. The more jobs and businesses that we bring back to tax-paying Americans citizens, the healthier our real economy will be and the more likely it will be for the American people to keep up and possibly even start to move forward again.

Unfortunately most of our politicians are a joke – Only it's not so funny, because over the past several decades, all they've been doing is screwing the American people, by stalling, spending, removing protections and allowing illegal aliens to continue to pour in and American jobs and industry to pour out, and all while collecting their American tax-payer funded pay checks, benefits and whatever else they get on the side from their various lobbyist friends.

It seems to me that over the last 2-3 decades that both parties were always able to distract and polarize voters with insignificant peripheral social issues like gay marriage and abortion, which got most voters so caught up in the BS that they'd always lose sight of the bigger picture. If more people would have listened to Ross Perot back in 1992, America wouldn't be in this mess. I and many other people, who were able to see through all of the left vs right BS, did vote for Perot, because he was straight forward and just used common sense. He cared about his country and the American people.

We'd really all be better off by just cutting through the BS and all the my team vs your team name calling nonsense and really focus on America and improving the future of the American people.

Once they're elected, our leaders should be working together for the good of our country and our citizens by using combinations of the best ideas from both sides. – Instead of just trying to make the other side look bad so that they'll lose the next election. – How's that nonsense been working out for the American People and the Real American Economy?

All the nonsense just allows the puppet-masters to continue to do what's best for them at the expense of the American people while we're polarized and distracted.

But, let's face it – Neither party is actually running our country – Powerful puppet-masters play both sides to make sure that they get what they want. Unfortunately what they want is not usually in the best interest of the majority of the American people. (American citizens)

The so called "Global Market Place" is not a level playing field. Companies may have made higher profits by "outsourcing", but they've been putting middle class Americans who are a good part of the world's customer base out of work.

Foreign Lobbyists here in the US promote sending US jobs to countries like China, India and Mexico where they work for slave wages, no benefits, no OSHA safety standards or no real environment regulations. It also doesn't help us compete when these company's factories are subsidized by China's communist government. Just check out the current Chinese extreme pollution issues – We all live in the same world, but not every country plays by the same rules.

The American people need American leaders who will start putting some sensible measures in place to stem the tide or this is going to continue to have a devastating effect on the United States of America and the American people.

Aren't there at least a handful of these powerful puppet-masters that are fellow Americans with enough of a conscience, guts and loyalty to America and their fellow Americans to start trying to turn this trend around?

If there aren't any, we're screwed.

If more people would have listened to Ross Perot back in 1992, America wouldn't be in this mess.

The American People need Our Leaders to start remembering that they are elected by the Citizens of the United States of America to represent the interests of those citizens and the country itself and that They're NOT Elected By or To Represent the Global Market Place, Lobbyist, Foreign citizens or Illegal Aliens.

as long as lobbyist and wall st. are pimping our politicians you could have a thousand political parties and it still would not make any improvements to this country.why would a politician spend millions of dollars to take a job that pays $174,000 a year?

The American People deserve much better choices.

The problem in trying to elect good leaders for The United States of America has nothing to do with the color or gender of our politicians. It's our politician's, from both parties, lack of honesty and the lack of willingness to do right by the US citizens that they're elected by and should be representing.

Let's face it both parties are just doing the bidding of their masters, while lamely trying to look like they're trying to represent us. Wouldn't it be nice, if some of these puppet masters were conscientious loyal Americans who loved their country and cared about their fellow Americans enough that they would finally start pointing their lap-dog-politicians in the direction of doing right by the American People? Maybe that's delusional on my part – But if this doesn't start happening soon, the American people and the future of the country that we love is doomed.

The American People deserve leaders that will honor the fact that they are elected by the Citizens of the United States of America to represent the interests of those citizens and the country itself and that They are NOT Elected By or To Represent the Global Market Place, Lobbyist, Foreign citizens or Illegal Aliens.

The American People need Loyal American Leaders who will stop selling us out to countries like Communist China, India and Mexico.

The American people only deserve what they are willing to work and/or fight for. Politicians don't become elected officials by magic or accident. The oh so deserving American people to whom you often refer elect and re-elect them. The American people demanding term-limits or more parties are like Dorothy in the Wizard of Oz. They've had the power to get what they want all they have to do is exercise their right to vote.

Wrong "commonsensedux" – And you've definitely selected the wrong name for yourself, because based on your comment, you obviously don't have any.
