Benghazi witch-hunt or cover-up?

Benghazi witch-hunt or cover-up?

House Republicans are unlikely to bend to Democratic demands for more equity in the structure of a select committee to investigate the Benghazi terror attack, a GOP source familiar with the matter told CNN.

The House was set to vote on creating the panel later in the day that, at this point, would include seven Republicans and five Democrats.

House Speaker John Boehner called that division fair on Thursday at a briefing with reporters, and said he had spoken with Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi about her party's concerns.

Boehner said of the conversation that he "made clear that this is a serious investigation, that we wanted to work together to get to the truth." FULL STORY.

Is the Benghazi investigation a worthwhile use of taxpayer money?

The current "committee" is a shameful attempt to score cheap political points over the deaths of 4 Americans. We KNOW what happened after multiple investigations. Hopefully, the voting public will run these committee members out of office the next time around. Serving abroad in an embassy can be dangerous depending on its location. The Ambassador was asked if he wanted additional security but he declined, the Republicans slashed the embassy security budget by $300 million dollars. This is an example of the fiscal stewardship the Republicans have to offer, trillion dollar debt for unnecessary war(s), deny unemployment to millions of Americans, etc. But they can always dip into the Treasury for additional funds for political muckraking. Hooray for us and the hell with you, and then have the temerity to ask us for our votes. The GOP is not a political party, it is a racketeering enterprise.

The body of 4 Americans left to fend for themselves is not a witch hunt, those were 4 breathing Americans that were under the then SoS Hillary Clinton so if you feel good with the death of 4 Americans that didn't need to happen then you're right it was a witch hunt. But if it were your Brother, Uncle, Cousin, Father, Son or Husband that was left to die there you must ask yourself, is this a witch hunt or a fact finding quest. This could all be over already, if the agencies were to release all the documents and emails that had anything to do with this. But they don't want to the truth to be told only what they want you to know is what they are willing to say to show. This is nothing more than a cover up to protect the guilty.

Since the GOP failed to repeal Obamacare as promised, they need to put on a talent show for the Koch Brothers and other donors to show that they still have what it takes to hassle the Democrats.

Look, many comments state that they think this is a waste of time. (Witch Hunt) but the fact remains that there are a lot of unanswered questions. Maybe you don't care about what really happen or so bias you don't want to know, but those congress work for me too and I do want to know what happen and who's responsible for the mistakes, These guys get paid whether they have there thumb up their butt or investigating a screw up. Get over it, some of us have a right to know and if you do not care then just shut up and the process move forward.

I agree. What exactly do they believe is being covered up and why? One of the Republican's favorite talking points is whether this was an act of terrorism or a spontaneous demonstration that turned violent. In either case even if were mistaken about the cause of tragedy why do Republicans think this would be some massive cover up?

President Obama tried to cover up the woefully insufficient security given to this embassy on 9/11 anniversary. The administration then tried to cover up the fact that they did not do their job. The President or whoever was covering for the President thought they could get away with this and lies snowballed. Whether directly his fault or his incompetent staff, President Obama lied about the security, the made up video story. At the very least, it was complete incompetence and at worst, our President let these people died to cover up that incompetence.

This has been investigated 7 times.

The questions have all been asked. Answers have been provided.

The Democrats have gone along with it. But at a certain point the GOP either has to come up with new questions or accept the answers they've been given. We've reached that point.

There is nothing more that congressional investigation will find out. The other 7 investigations took care of that. This is all about bringing up the issue for political purposes, and the GOP is using taxpayer money to do it.

If I'm investigating a murder and I ask questions of the employer of the person killed... it's completely legitimate. If I investigate and ask questions a second or a third time... perhaps I'm doing due dilligence and just making sure everything checks out for the sake of the family.

But by the 7th time... it's becoming harassment of that employer unless I have some new leads to follow or questions to ask.

The GOP has nothing new to investigate on Benghazi. They've asked all the questions and followed all the evidence SEVEN TIMES. At this point it's harrassment.

Kurt, The reason there is seven investigations is because no one has ever answered the questions. This administration repeatedly lies over and over to the point where no one knows what the truth is anymore. The White House press secretary openly lied to the press on several occasions. I find that my Democrat friends are so adamant about protecting the crooks in the White House that they were willing to ignore the facts that a president openly and deliberately lied to the American people for political gain. I'm shocked that you do not find that to be a problem. I guess in the Democrat world lying and misleading the people is just a way of life. Sorry I don't follow your philosophy. .

Trying to convince the left that they should development even a "smidgen" of moral outrage about what happened in Benghazi and the cover-up perpetrated by the administration afterwards is a complete waste of time. After all, these are the same people who think its ok to kill unborn children, for any reason. Why would they care about four murdered americans?
All the name calling, the denial of facts already discovered, attempting to find some sort of moral equivalency to to events from the past clearly indicate they know the defecation is getting ready to hit the ventilation, and its going to be pretty ugly.

    Trey dont play.

The moral outrage is that Cheney gave a stand down order on 9/11.
The moral outrage is that republican chickhawks who claim to be pro-life are fine with sending other people's children to die to fight in an illegal war with a country that did not attack us. So 4 Americans die and you're indigent for political points, but you were totally silent while score of them died during the previous administration.

Let me suggest a new word. Benghazi is a smokescreen. Republicans want to distract people, including their base, from the fact that they really have nothing to run on, now that Obamacare has failed to fail. So what if some person from the White House sent an e-mail telling Democrats to put the their best spin on the event. Their best spin was also what the CIA believed at the time. Unless the person sending the e-mail was Obama or Hillary, Republicans really have nothing.

If its a witch hunt is Boehner the Devil? Yeah, it's definitely a witch hunt. It is also an attempt to deflect any criticism away from the GOP which steadfastly refused to appropriate a lot more $$$ resources to secure our embassies. They used the ploy they always use: if you want money to secure the embassy then you must cut elsewhere. Now that is Devilish. so the House with its nutty Tea Partiers wouldn't spend an extra dime to ensure our ambassador was safe. The congress has blood on it hands in his death.

Desperation on the part of the Republicans who are scared to death that Hilary Clinton will run is so clear. If she hadn't been Sec. of State at the time, this would never have been an issue. Compared to what happened under Bush, it is clearly nowhere near as serious. Four people dying is terrible but compare that to 4000 plus under Bush. It is also desperation on the part of those in the media who exploited this whole Benghazi attack at the time and since then since they want to make it seem like they were right and also to boost ratings. Shameful. Those who repeat the Republican talking points perfectly are showing their true colours. Fundraising off of this is despicable. How do they think Ambassador Steven's father feels about that?

I will agree that Benghazi is not a witch hunt if you can name even one GOP Congressmen that strongly protested about Administration incompetence or honesty during any of the 13 US embassy attacks resulting in 77 US deaths during GW's term.......including the 2 consecutive attacks in Riyadh, where there was sufficient time to adjust from the first attack.......I will take even a strong protest, let alone a congressional investigation.....who? when?

I want to know who is responsible for leaking to the press that this office in Benghazi was a CIA operation. Many foreign service agents have died because of this leak. Clearly whoever is responsible is more concerned with scoring political points than protecting our nation.

I know why Republicans need this now. Republicans don’t have anything to show for the last 30 years. They have failed miserably at everything they promised their voters. They have failed miserably at running our country and it’s economy. Despite all the losing battles, Republicans still cling to the cynicism that has been eroding their base. Now what it takes for Republicans to win is desperation, to restrict voting rights(where they can) and fundraise off of the deaths of honorable men and women of our foreign service.

I already know what happened at Benghazi. Some terrorist attacked the embassy and killed some US citizens. It’s a terrible tragedy, and it happens more often than we’d like to admit. Americans were killed many times at embassies while GW Bush was President and I didn’t hear a peep of outrage from Republicans or the media then.

Didn't hear a peep out the Republicans when folks died at embassies under Bush's watch. How about 9/11? 3000+ died on 9/11 on US soil. Was that a failure of leadership? Would that be a good reason to never vote for Republicans ever again? Or how about what Republicans did to our country after they failed to stop 9/11? The war in Iraq that killed 4500 more Americans that was based on lies Republicans told America? The cost of the war in Iraq alone could have funded Social Security for 75 years!!! Republicans voters are clearly heartless morons.

Sure, you Republican hacks can go on politicizing the deaths of honorable service men and women if you like, but don't think for a second that Americans are stupid enough to pass judgement on Hillary for the actions of terrorists in a foreign land. Well....... Republican Americans are stupid enough .......and/or they are just so empty inside that they'll believe anything they hear that justifies the anger they have for the world. By all means, you hacks keep carrying this rock, and by the time elections roll around the voters are going to be so fatigued from being pounded endlessly with the false and angry right-wing narrative of "Benghazi gate" they will be sure to vote for Hillary.

Republicans in the last 30 years have only demonstrated that they are the most cowardly type of people our world has to offer. They truly have no qualities and this benghazi gate affair just shines a light on it.

There have been SEVEN reports issued from GOP led committees on Benghazi. SEVEN.

None of those reports have found any evidence that was enough to warrant charges against anyone.

So the GOP response is that the cover up must have been REALLY good... and an 8th comittee report will figure it all out.

Here's a hint... it's not about finding anything. All that will be discovered about this has already been discovered. It's about being able to get in front of some cameras and give speeches about how pissed off you are about Benghazi. There is no more information to find. There are no charges to be brought.

It's pure political posturing. The last SEVEN investigations by congress on this have already uncovered all there is. The 8th (and sure to come 9th, 10th, 11th, 12th and 50th) investigations will give the american people NOTHING.

One of my biggest problems with the tea party people is the refusal to accept the results of their own investigations. Anything that doesn't agree with their preconcieved ideas on a subject must be someone covering up or lying to them. They can't even fathom the idea that they might actually.... HAVE BEEN WRONG.

This issue has in my opinion investigated to death. To start, Susan Rice was unjustly made a scapegoat due to the talking points she made. What was said by her was based on the information that was given to her at that time. Information that was screened by the Director of National Intelligence. Next, the CIA was also there, and whatever they were doing, might have contributed to what happened, however the CIA Director wasn't grilled as much as the Secretary of State. Next, I have to include the British in this as well, because there was a jihadist that was recruited by Zawahiri to go to Libya from the U.K. to recruit fighters before this incident occurred. This man known only as: "AA", recruited 200 fighters by the end of 2011. The British knew who this man was, but were unable to reveal his identity due to a control order governed under British Law. Finally, the timing of this does suggest this "probe" is a GOP witch hunt. If Mrs. Clinton does run, the GOP doesn't have a candidate to rival her, their only hope is to remove her from the equaison.

Our founding father believed that democracy could only survive if we had a well informed public. The Terrorist attack on Benghazi did not fit Obama's delusion that Al
Qaeda has been decimated. They couldn't believe that after giving the
Muslim Brotherhood support and after giving weapons to the Terrorist to fight in

Democracy is dependent upon a free and impartial press reporting to the people. The US is no longer in that situation. The issue of Benghazi was decided by the Press in the days after the incident. At this time it will be left to the historians of future generations to decide.

When I was falsely accused of a serious crime I welcomed a full investigation to clear my name. Democrats are acting like Nixon who didn't think Watergate should be investigated either.
Imagine if a public school was being shot up and the government said the cops cannot make it in time to stop it, so the cops will not be sent in. these liberal pukes amongst us would be screaming bloody murder, and yet that's exactly what they did.

Steve, the house has investigated Benghazi and issued reports from GOP led groups SEVEN times.

At a certain point, when do you call it as having been investigated. SEVEN taxpayer funded GOP reports on Benghazi have led to no charges against anyone.

Get real Kurt. In all 7 investigations of this matter DEMs, have deliberately withheld critical information in order to hide the truth. How liberally blind are you?

        No... they haven't.

The GOP thinks there's more information here... but there simply isn't. They just don't like the answers they're getting.

If 7 investigations didn't uncover the truth, neither will an 8th. Why? Because it's the same people asking and answering the questions. What will change?

There are only two possibilities here. First... the GOP could be incompetent and there may actually be something here. But since they're incompetent. they still won't find it. The Second is that there's nothing there to find.

There haven't been delays on Benghazi testimony. The questions have been answered. Just because you and the GOP think there is more there that hasn't been revealed doesn't make that true.

  30. ALL Attacks

ALL attacks on a US embassy are terrorist attacks. So were the attacks that happened MORE OFTEN and MORE DEADLY than the ones under Bush. IT'S A GIVEN!!!!!! Are the GOP just mad that we didn't start ANOTHER "unfunded/off-the-books" war? Maybe the GOP are just embarrassed that THEY cut funding for security. Witch hunt it is.

It's not even a witch hunt. It's just political grandstanding.

The way you can tell is that they ask few questions and ignore the answers they don't like. Instead they find a way to rant and make speeches. Gowdy is among the worst at this sort of behavior... but it's not surprising considering that's how he was as a prosecutor as well... but judges in this area tend to let lawyers give their own opinions more then the law actually allows... so he fit right in.

They won't ever bring charges on this... just like they won't on the IRS stuff either. Why? Because they have absolutely nothing that would hold up in court. In fact, the evidence largely absolves the Obama administration.

For example... why wasn't the security detail increased? Perhaps because the ambassador decided against accepting additional security TWICE in the month before the attack.

Oh wait... they don't talk about that? I wonder why.

The only think the administration is guilty of is choosing a particular reason for the attacks from a list of 3 possible reasons they were presented with that ended up being incorrect. They then corrected the reason immediately when it became clear the reason they chose was incorrect.

The GOP seems to not care or understand about what is legal. A bad choice of talking points that was in fact part of the intelligence at the moment that was immediately changed when better intelligence came out is not illegal. Neither is taking the 5th at any time in a congressional hearing. yet the GOP has decided to push these issues where they KNOW that nothing illegal has been done for the sole reason of trying to make political gains.

I don't think it will work this time. Benghazi was too long ago, and the IRS stuff has been debunked to a large enough level that they aren't gaining on these. What's worse, if something big DOES come up, they'll be hit with "the boy who cried wolf" problem. Everyone will think they are just making stuff up even if there is something of substance in future accusations... because there has been nothing of substance with all they've been "investigating" since taking the house.

This is a White House cover up, period.

Benghazi is a cover-up of a Republican witch-hunt. If there was any substance to the Republican belief of a Democratic cover-up on Benghazi, two years of Republican investigation would have found it by now. The newly discovered e-mail from Rhodes tells us nothing. Just because someone sent an e-mail from the White House does not mean that Obama or Hillary was involved. Just ask Christie if he knew about the e-mail that was sent by his deputy chief of staff before the George Washington Bridge was shut down.

Just release all the documents pertaining to Benghazi already. Democrats have held on to them for two years now.

Bengahzi has been "committeed" to death. We should be spending hard-earned tax $ on things like creating jobs, fixing the nation's infrastructure (I shutter sometimes when I go over a bridge or overpass that's more than 40 years old–concrete deteriorates with age and steel rusts and loses strength over time), and people should be sick and tired of supporting politicians that do nothing but naysay and put sand in the wheels of progress. They are usually NOT serving the people, but, many are serving narrow special interest groups and the will of PACs who fill their re-election coffers with $. Politicians should not be using something like the Bengahzi incident, where people died, to raise money to further stymie the efforts at moving the nation forward on job growth, climate change initiatives, changing laws so that the !% rich billionaires don't control the airwaves, political input, preventing eco-friendly businesses to have a shot at the American Dream, and blocking legislation that would change the patent law so that generic drugs are more available to the public, etc.

Legislators seem to have stretched their roles & responsibilities..should....prepare budgets..rely on Inspector general staff to investigate & State Dept to handle foreign affairs. Congress funds their head hunts & vacations around the world for their Congressional breaks..A guise to further & needlessly expend tax dollars for their leisure & costly travel. (To validate expenditures?)
